School of Languages and Cultures University of Sheffield We would like to extend an invitation for the submission of papers to be presented at a colloquium organised by postgraduate students in the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of Sheffield. The theme of the colloquium will be “Conformity and Dissent”, a wide and multidisciplinary motif which particularly welcomes work of an interdisciplinary nature. Conformity and dissent are concepts which impact upon all aspects of human society and interaction. Authorities and norms are continually and inevitably established in all areas of culture and language, and the very nature of these inspires either observance or resistance within their individual contexts. Analysis of the complexities and parameters which govern these concepts can offer intriguing insights into the intricacies of human nature, and by extension, such analysis can serve as a framework by which to evaluate a diverse range of global tendencies. This colloquium welcomes papers which explore the themes of conformity and/or dissent in the context of language and culture. This may include, but is by no means restricted to:

UPDATE: The abstract deadline has been extended to SUNDAY 20TH APRIL 2014 We would also welcome applications for posters, as well as suggestions regarding other methods of exploring these themes in ways that move away from primarily academic papers. These may take the form of exhibitions of artwork, videos or music, for example, and such suggestions should also be sent to the above address by the stated deadline. |
